Native Stingless Bees
Native stingless bees
You may wonder why bees are so important, well bees are essential for a healthy environment. They pollinate flowers and without bees and other insect pollinators, life on this planet as we know would collapse.
There are over 1600 species of native bees and of these 11 species are native stingless bees which are small and dark coloured. These bees live in a colony with a queen bee and over evolutionary time have lost the ability to sting.
Land clearing and some agricultural practices can destroy food sources and nest sites which may threaten the survival of our native bees in some landscapes. You can assist by protecting native vegetation, and planting pollen and nectar-rich native flowers and providing nest sites in your garden.
We have teamed up with Dr Tobias Smith from BeeAware Brisbane who has installed native stingless beehives within the Sanctuary.
A native beehive only produces about 1 kg of harvestable honey per year making it a rare and tangy delicacy.
